Small is Beautiful - CLMC Micro Cove

CLMC Micro Cove is a new small interior lighting profile which has the ability to be joined seamlessly together - with no dark zones at the joints! Size is important here, CLMC is just 22 x 13mm, so will fit into almost any concealed space - small coves and niches of course, but other areas and architectural features will benefit as well.

It also has the advantage of PWM dimming and on board driver technology, so is simple to install.

The system uses the Seoul STW series LED and is available in either white (5600K, CRI70) or warm white (3000k, CRI80).

Three standard sizes are produced -300mm with a 216 lumen output; 600mm with 432 lumens and 1200mm with 864 lumens (white 5600K figures, warm white will be 30% less).

CLMC was shown at the Arc11 show this year in prototype form, it will be on our stand at the LuxLive exhibition next month, come and take a look.

New - CLMG Micro Grazer

This new linear grazing profile provides a combination of small size with excellent wall grazing performance. With the advantage of PWM dimming and on board driver technology, this new system is flexible in use, is easy to install and can have a wide choice of LED colours fitted.
As its name suggests this profile is very small - 18mm diameter - but it packs a powerful punch. The longest standard length, 1220mm, has a 2340 lumen output when fitted with the 4000K white version of the Seoul Z5 LED.
In addition to the normal 9 x 24 degree lens which gives such great wall grazing, symmetrical 8, 12, 20 or 30 degree lenses can be specified for other types of lighting effects utilizing this tiny luminaire. In addition, 3000k warm white at 80CRI or 4000K white at 70CRI as well as a variety of colours can be specified.

Stock lengths are 420, 620 and 1220mm, and a simple 12Vdc driver of the correct wattage is all that is required to power the system.

The product was first shown at the Arc show in January and is now in full production.

Endo downlights for Langbourn HQ

The central London headquarters of property developers Langbourn have been relit using Endo downlights from Crescent.
All the general offices, including the boardroom and reception area, were included in a redesign conducted by Miles Pinniger.
The existing scheme used 15W CFL downlights with surface diffusers which produced rather poor colour rendition. These were replaced one for one by Endo R7 14W wide beam adjustable units in their 3000K warm white guise. Emergency packs from Existalite were included on thirteen of the downlights.
Langbourn MD Nigel Wiggins commented on "a dramatic transformation" of the space which provided improved colour rendition and an increased lighting level.
Miles Pinniger: " these Endo fittings are the ideal solution for any designer wanting to create the impression of an office lit with MR16 low voltage downlights but wanting to deliver a much more efficient, low maintenance scheme and also one which can comply with Part 2A & B of the building regulations"

Endo Lights Freemasons Hall

Freemasons' Hall is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England and the principal meeting place for Masonic Lodges in London. Grand Lodge has been in Great Queen Street since 1775; the present hall, a fine example of Art Deco architecture, is the third building on the site.

The Old Boardroom in the Freemasons' Hall has been relit by Lighting Designer Miles Pinniger in a scheme that included a number of Endo LED downlights from Crescent.To achieve the required lighting levels from the 6 metre ceiling height, some of the larger, more powerful units were utilised - eight 66W fixed, together with seven 34W adjustable units, complemented by eight Crescent CLF7002 units fitted with Bridgelux LED modules.In addition, the two existing bronze and glass chandeliers were refurbished and updated with CFL sources. These chandeliers, together with the eight wall lights are perceived as the main lighting source, partly due to the discrete nature of the downlights and their excellent glare control. A wireless control system was fitted to enable the dimming of the downlights, whilst 400 lux can be achieved at full output of both the chandeliers and downlights.

Crescent Launch CLM

We have recently launched our latest linear LED product, CLM, an IP67 line voltage wall grazing system.

CLM provides superb single colour light 'grazed' over horizontal or vertical surfaces, such as building facades, bridges, landscape features and, yes, walls!

CLM is a robustly constructed unit of extruded and machined aluminium alloy which is then anodised to provide an attractive but resilient weatherproof finish. It uses the latest Seoul 1.2W AC LEDs - either 4 in the 400mm or 12 in the 1200mm length module.

The sealing of all joints and the effective use of cable glands ensures an IP67 rating for all weather use. Using its loop in/loop out facility the system is interconnectable up to a maximum of 40 metres from one supply point. The connectors used are the robust multipole HO7RN variety. There is a fixed bracket available which gives the correct offset from the mounting surface for excellent grazing effects.
This system is currently being produced for a large landscape project (more details to follow!) and working samples will soon be available for demonstration from your local representative.

Overlooking the Fal estuary in Cornwall, The modern National Trust Garden at Trelissick, near Truro was created within shelter belts planted 200 years ago. It is constantly evolving, with new planting and fresh ideas.

The iconic water tower was built for irrigation and fire control; now it is used as a holiday home. Crescent has helped the staff at Trelissick to design a lighting scheme for the water tower and part of the gardens, covering an area of approximately 5 acres. Crescent supplied flood and spotlights from Paviom, and made extensive use of their own LED spot and linear products throughout the project.

For ten days before Christmas these areas were open until 7pm to give visitors a new night time experience. Many of the trees and shrubs around the Loop Walk were illuminated. Some simply flooded with metal halide sources, others treated to LED spotlights with a mixture of white light and RGB colour change effects to provide drama and interest.

The water tower was flood lit and provided an arresting feature when viewed from the car park where visitors first arrive, as it was gift wrapped (see heading image).

John Lanyon, Gardens Manager for the National Trust at Trelissick commented "We are really pleased with the combination of floodlighting and colour changing effects bringing the gardens to life at night, and the high quality of the products themselves"

At the entrance to the garden the interactive art sculpture 'Doodle' by Leolightdesign, which uses Crescent side glow fibre optic cable provided an intriguing welcome, and proved popular with younger visitors.

Endo and 'Doodle' at Arc11

As Arc returns to its original home, the Business Design Centre in Islington next January, and Crescent moves to a prominent new position by the main stand entrance, stand V10.
The comprehensive Endo LEDZ range will be well represented (all nine sizes of downlight will be displayed, from 7 to 66W) and new LED downlights manufactured in the UK featuring Bridgelux, Xicato and Philips Fortimo LED modules will also feature.
Also on the stand will be 'Doodle', an interactive piece of light art from Leolightdesign (see image left) which was first shown in Frankfurt's Luminale in April this year. 'Doodle' uses Crescent BPAK150 side emitting cable powered by a CRE6155 150WHQI projector and is 1.8 metres high, and we are sure will create much 'hands on' interest with visitors.
Leolightdesign are an independent lighting design practice specialising in light and health. They also create art, Light Sculptures and Light Installations, 'Doodle' encouraging participants to play, tough and experience light in a new way.
We hope to meet as many of you as possible at Arc on January 12th and 13th in London at the Business Design Centre.

New LED downlights

The new range of LED downlights launched in September is creating great interest. None more so than the CLF7002 unit with the Bridgelux LED module. This unit when used with the 1050mA driver delivers a terrific 942 lumens in its neutral white(4100K) form. That's quite a performance from a unit that is only 100mm diameter and 56 mm deep. The trim options are useful too. The glass drop ring is attractive in a subtle way, whilst for bathrooms and other 'wet' areas there is a white or polished chrome effect IP54 trim assembly.

The performance of the Bridgelux module with its remote phosphor construction means that this product is real alternative to conventional 35 & 50W MR16 downlights, and running at 15W presents a significant energy saving. The unit complies with the requirements of Part 'L' of the UK building regulations, can qualify for loans from the Carbon Trust and offers tax advantages via the ECA scheme. Endo Shines in Frankfurt

The new Endo LEDZ range was shown to great effect on the stand that Crescent shared with German partners LBM & Endo themselves.Particularly striking was the comparison between conventional display lighting (which Endo have produced for many years) and the new LEDZ products which were displayed alongside. A visual comparison showed the effects to be very similar (the LEDZ are fitted to the right hand side in the image shown), whist the spot light levels using the LEDZ products were higher. The real telling information was found on the energy consumption metering - the LEDZ side showing between 35 & 50% of the conventional lighting load depending on the fittings selected.

The LEDZ range comprises luminaires that contain one of nine replaceable LED modules with sizes from 7 to 66W. Each module has a choice of purpose designed lenses and has a guaranteed life of 5 years.The modues were displayed individually against a wall to illustrate their distribution, as can be seen in the image on the right below.

The luminaire range is truly huge, featuring downlights, spots, pendants and exterior fixtures and amounting to over 700 versions.
Of course other Crescent LED lighting solutions were on show including representatives of all the linear CL range, and featuring the new exterior rated CLI RGB modules with integral drivers and interlink capability. The display is shown on the left.

Fibre optic products were represented by the LED powered projector in its RGB and tuneable white versions, and by a 150W HQI 6155 running a demonstration loop of BPAK side emitting fibre and FSPTe cable which was used to display various fittings.

'Doodle' at Luminale in Frankfurt

Leolight design showed the interactive light sculpture Doodle at the Heyne Kunstfabrik in Offenbach, near Frankfurt. The special solo exhibition ran alongside the Luminale 2010 event. Leolight constructed ‘Doodle’ using BPAK150 side emitting fibre and a CRE6155 projector, making great use of it’s flexibility. Sandra Decker lighting partner in Leolight describes the concept of the piece - “Initially the Doodle is a simple, linear light sculpture. However the Doodle is not predefined by the artist. Instead the fibre optic light installation inspires visitors to experience and interact with light. They sculpture their own linear light installation and become the creators of the Doodle”. The images below show Doodle during the exhibition, and the one on the far right show the 'skier' Doodle by Alan Weaver & Martin Perman of Crescent when they visited the exhibition site - naive? You should have been there to try yourself!!

ENDO Arrives!
Small but perfectly formed, that was the Arc show this year. We were in the same space as last year in the centre of things and with the stand rightly dominated by the fantastic new Endo LEDZ range.The vast selection was represented by a number of products from the extensive selection of downlights, some ot the exterior spotlights and an interesting LED pendant. The whole range (which is huge - more than two thousand products) is designed around six different LED module sizes, containing three to thirtysix Luxeon Rebel LEDs. All of these fittings are constructed so that the modules are replaceable which means that the fitting will last longer than the LEDs themselves or can be upgraded as Led technology advances.
One of the keys to the effectiveness of these products is the special optical configuration to the LED modules -unique to Endo and designed in their own labs. These have been matched carefully to the number of LEDs in the array and designed to compare to conventional lumiaire performance of a given size, be it tungsten halogen, compact fluorescent, or even fittings using the smaller metal halide lamps. Some of the energy & life cost savings are amazing - the new LEDZ catalogue has some good examples.

Of course we showed other Crescent products as well, the CLI integral linear system in it's RGB guise, the LED fibre optic projector demonstrating tuneable white light (2700K - 7500K) and new LED lamp oduef or the Agabekov 'B' Light range.

Cabot Circus, Bristol

Cabot Square in the centre of Bristol took over three years to build and costing in excess of £500 million, providing city centre visitors with over 120 new shops, including 15 major flagship stores.

The three-tiered shopping development will also provide space for many new restaurants and the UK's third Showcase Cinema de Lux, offering 13 screens, three of which will show films in 3D.
This incredible development in the heart of Bristol is covered by a unique shell-shaped glass roof; the only one of its kind in Europe. Crescent CLO linear LED system is used to light a number of areas around the centre including the roof itself as can be seen in the above image.

In a number of areas the system is used to graze light up or down walls, & in one case blue light across a textured wall, turning it into a notable feature. On the external wall adjacent to the car park link bridge it is used to fill the niches with coloured light as can be seen from the right hand image.

Sands Hotel, St Barts

The Sand Club hotel, situated on Flamand beach, is in a superb position on the northern part of the tiny Caribbean island of St Barts.

The Hotel has guestroom villas, a games room, a pool and staff quarters. It was lit by Firefly Design, who used a number of innovative methods to achieve a minimalist effect with low energy consumption.

The pool uses concealed LED strip lights from Crescent just above the water line, which are hidden from view so they provide no glare whatsoever. The linear system with 120 LEDs/metre is resin filled to achieve its IP68 rating.

Crescent also supplied a large number of recessed square paver fittings with warm white LEDs that were used around the exterior of the hotel.

This fixture has also been utilised in some of the villas where they have been made fully dimmable, to create a subtle, calm effect.

All exterior lighting is low-wattage, high-output LED as energy is at a premium on the island.

Blackfriars Bridge

The lighting in an area leading up to Blackfrairs Bridge in London has been revamped by lighting designers Firefly using Crescent CLVS linear colour changing RGB system.

Seventeen lengths of the slim profile were installed behind curved mirrors above a pedestrian ramp area on the north bank entrance to the bridge, to shine up into the bridge structure.
The lighting system was programmed by Crescent with strict instructions for no red, blue or green alone to be used, but subtle mixtures of the three colours.

The programme runs daily from 3pm to 9am and has a static gold colour for the first 55 minutes followed by a ripple of cool colours along the length of the modules for 5 minutes.
The next 55 minutes has the gold fading back & forth with yellow before the ripple effect starts. Then yellow is the static colour before the ripple again. This sequence is repeated for the rest of the programme with other static colours replacing the yellow and a cool ripple replacing the warm one at 4am.

Peter Veale of Firefly commented:
"We did the project with the architects The Facility. It was quite a tight budget project and we wanted to create an animated colour-changing design where the fittings and drivers were hidden behind the reflectors, but the effect still needed to be visible from the other side of the river. All equipment had to be durable against the elements and we knew that the Crescent CL fittings were up to the job."
